| Question: Hi Constance: I have a small bathroom, and my husband feels that we need to expand it. (Or find another house!) I don’t want to move, but we both feel that a change needs to be made. Is there a way to expand without moving walls and adding that additional expense? We also don’t have any additional space to expand into. Thanks for responding! Margie Carmichael Answer: Hi Margie: Thank you for the e-mail! Yes, there are a number of things that you can do, although you may be limited to some of them. I don’t have any interior views of your bathroom, but here goes. I wanted to show you an example of how to expand space without actually moving any perimeter walls. To the right you will see a good example of how this was actually accomplished in a 30 year old tract home about 10 years ago. The top layout is the exact dimensions as the bottom layout. However, several positive things were accomplished with the changes made here. The initial design when the house was built (shown on top) was a bad design to start with. The lady of the house literally had to go into a closet to get to her vanity. With the wall adjacent to the tub extending out so far, it certainly created a sense of two separate spaces in this small bathroom. There was also no privacy, which both husband and wife requested when I redesigned the space. The major objective when trying to gain more usable space without increasing sq. footage is to VISUALLY expand the area. Here, we did so by eliminating the “closet” while creating an open vanity area, adding glass block walls in two areas to allow for better distribution of natural light and still maintain privacy, and removing the fur-down from above the old cabinetry and replacing it with recessed lighting, therefore visually expanding upward. A pocket door was installed as a space saver that led to the master bedroom. The plumbing did not have to be relocated when the jetted tub was installed, saving money. We also created a more functional use of the existing cabinetry space. Thanks for writing! Connie |
