Chauncey Hinman began his
photography career on the Mississippi Coast in 1950, continuing until
his death in 1989, photographing the famous, the not so famous, and
thousands of families. His work consisted of commercial photography,
aerial photography, family and school photography, special and historic
events, historic properties, tourist attractions, famous landmarks, and
photography for the “art” of it. His archives consist of tens of
thousands of negatives (who’s counting!) of special value to many. Mary
Ann Mobley, Ms. Mississippi who became Ms. America, is included, along
with many famous golfers whom he photographed for Golf Magazine. Down
South magazine was a client as well as the local Chambers of Commerce.
Chauncey Hinman is probably best known for his aerial and ground photos
of Hurricane Camille, and the book he published that followed on the
subject. The Sun Herald newspaper still utilizes his photos to this day.
